It’s that time of year. Seniors are submitting college applications and asking themselves an important question: Did I do everything possible to make my application AWESOME? I want to share some of MY top questions I encourage you to ask before hitting SUBMIT:

Did I PREVIEW every section of the Common App, seeing my application the way colleges will see it? Did I adjust spacing & formatting & preview again?

Everything has word or character counts, and the Common App STOPS at the limit. Do I see ALL OF MY WORDS in each response, or did it cut me off anywhere?

Do my activities include enough WOW FACTORS & show my impact wherever possible?

Does my main essay tell my BEST story in a compelling, creative way?

If I had to enter grades, does what I entered MIRROR my transcript exactly?

Is my application consistent & accurate throughout in terms of information, facts, etc.?

Did I add Academic Honors to the Education section and explain if needed?

Did I explain anything that needs to be (good or bad) in the Additional Information or Challenges & Circumstances section? Are there any red flags I need to avoid or explain?

Did I review everything with fresh eyes after giving it a break and show someone I trust (parent, teacher, college coach)?

Am I applying on time and keeping tabs on anything else I need to submit (recs, test scores, transcripts, etc.)?

I can think of many more but thought this would be helpful to share! Keep in mind, you CAN change information in your Common App AFTER applying to a school (updates, mistakes you find, etc.), and it’s best to preview/proof carefully EACH time you apply to a school!

I’ve found that when students uncover unique, interesting facts about a college and THEN connect these findings to THEM in meaningful ways, that they can really WOW a Why Essay and more. Anyone can find something on the home page of a college website. But Power Hour students do a lot more. It’s important to dig for information and find support that is not only unique to YOU, but won’t be that run-of-the-mill boring stuff anyone can say. Plus, students tell me that sometimes during this research, they find a school that isn’t really a good fit for them after all (or vice versa).

So where can you find this information? Interview current students; read college newspapers/blogs; find news on programs, professors, and innovation at the school. And more!

Here’s what we’re exploring in this class, “How Early Research Can Power Your List + Supplements”:

Learn creative research strategies to find unique facts about each college so you can draw connections that are meaningful to YOU. This will not only power your LIST as you uncover what makes each school special (or not!) for YOUR needs, but…this will fuel your supplemental essays big time during the crunch period.

Where can you find these creative facts?

What role should AI play in your research, and how can you protect yourself when using this tool?

How should you write about your connections to schools?

Hear examples of meaningful connections between student and school to inspire your own writing.

What’s the best way to ask admissions officers questions you may have to continue to find interesting things to talk about in essays? And…how can you come up with meaningful questions to ASK if you’re not sure?

As a bonus, students will receive my NEW RESEARCH WORKSHEET to collect information. Grab your spot here (space is limited).
