After a busy year of online learning with students, I introduced a NEW workshop for 2021 – “How Early Research and Planning Can Power Your College Essays AND List.” I’ve found that when students uncover unique, interesting facts about a college and THEN connect these findings to THEM in meaningful ways, that they can really WOW a Why Essay and more. Anyone can find something on the home page of a college website. But Power Hour Editing students do a lot more. It’s important to dig for information and find support that is not only unique to YOU, but won’t be that run-of-the-mill boring stuff anyone can say. Plus, students tell me that sometimes during this research, they find a school that isn’t really a good fit for them after all (or vice versa).

So where can you find this information? Interview current students; read college newspapers/blogs; find news on programs, professors, and innovation at the school.

Here’s what we’re exploring in this new class:

    • Learn creative research strategies to find unique facts about each college so you can draw connections that are meaningful to YOU. This will not only power your LIST as you uncover what makes each school special (or not!) for YOUR needs, but…this will fuel your supplemental essays big time during the crunch period.
    • Where can you find these creative facts?
    • How should you write about them?
    • Hear examples of meaningful connections between student and school to inspire your own writing
    • What’s the best way to ask admissions officers questions you may have to continue to find interesting things to talk about in essays? And…how can you come up with meaningful questions to ASK if you’re not sure?

As a bonus, students will receive my customizable spreadsheet organizer to collect information. Find class information here, and registration here. The next Research Workshop will be held Wednesday, May 19th at 7 pm by Zoom.
