The Common App recently shared “What’s New with Common App,” outlining changes we’ll see this year. I’ve summarized some of the key changes you’ll see in this year’s Common App below:

  • Main Essay prompts. They deleted one (problem you’ve solved) and added one (about gratitude).
  • Who answers what prompt? This is a VERY popular question from my students. I assure them that the question you answer does NOT matter; just make sure that your essay FITS the prompt you select. The Common App shared who answered what last year.

  • The COVID-19 question is returning. Basically, COVID happened, how did it affect you? I’m hearing from admissions officers that if that adds to the context of YOU, go for it! No one will be penalized for not answering this optional question. Note – 1/3 of the applicants responded to the question last year.
  • Started Your Common App BEFORE 8/1? Note that NOT everything will roll over. Here’s a great visual explaining that. I recommend proofing your Common App after 8/1 if you previously entered information.

  • There ARE some big changes to this year’s Common App – here’s a summary:

  • Activity Section. They confirmed there are no changes to this section, including character counts. Organization name (100 characters), Position/leadership (50 characters), Description (150 characters). Students, include your “Wow Factors” here!
  • FERPA Release. If you use Naviance, you’ll need to connect your Common App to Naviance to invite recommendation letters. You’ll complete this AFTER taking some steps outlined here.
  • First time with the Common App? LOTS of great resources to make this super easy here.

Amy’s Power Tip: You can PREVIEW your Common App BEFORE submitting to schools! I heard from one admissions officer that a student once uploaded breakup texts from her boyfriend instead of her essay. This is totally avoidable! After you enter your information, PROOF & PREVIEW it!
